EFCC arraigns Winners pastor for fraud
On June 21, Temidayo Eseyin, an associate pastor with the Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), was arraigned by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He was charged with allegedly defrauding Landmark University in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, of N19.3 million.
Eseyin, who is a lawyer and a former member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association in Ilorin, was accused of dishonestly misappropriating university funds. According to a petition to the EFCC, Eseyin had access to the university's properties, title documents, and funds while working as a counsel/attorney for Landmark University.
The specific allegation against Eseyin is related to his management of a property known as the "Old Midland Building" belonging to Landmark University. He allegedly collected rent for the property for eight years but could not produce the funds when asked. The petitioner also claimed that Eseyin attempted to sell the property without permission from the university, which led to the petition to the EFCC.
Eseyin pleaded not guilty to the charge. The EFCC counsel requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Centre pending trial. However, Eseyin's lawyer filed an application for bail, which was granted by Justice Funsho Lawal of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.
The judge admitted Eseyin to bail in the sum of N10 million with two sureties of N5 million each. The sureties must own land within the court's jurisdiction. The judge ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the EFCC until he meets the bail conditions. The case was adjourned to a date to be communicated to the parties.
